To make sure that you organization’s operating system, hardware, software, clients, and other elements meet the requirements for Exchange 2016.

Exchange 2016 installation divided into 2 parts

1. Exchange Server Roles
2. Office Online Server Preview

Before you begin
• Forest Functional level is at least Windows Server 2008, Schema master is at least Windows Server 2008 or later.
• full installation of Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 must be used
• Exchange Host must be joined AD forest and Domain
• Install the latest Windows updates

Exchange Server Roles prerequisites

Active Directory preparation

First, install .NET Framework 4.5.2 on the computer that will be used to prepare Active Directory.
Install the Remote Tools Administration Pack
1. Open Windows PowerShell.
2. Install the Remote Tools Administration Pack using the following command.

Install-WindowsFeature RSAT-ADDS

Windows Server Roles, Features, and Software

The prerequisites that are needed to install Exchange 2016 on computers running Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 depends on which Exchange role you want to install.

Mailbox Server Role

1. Open Windows PowerShell.
2. Run the following command to install the required Windows components.

Install-WindowsFeature AS-HTTP-Activation, Desktop-Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy, RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, RSAT-Clustering-Mgmt, RSAT-Clustering-PowerShell, Web-Mgmt-Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Http-Redirect, Web-Http-Tracing, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console, Web-Metabase, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Server, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Static-Content, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-WMI, Windows-Identity-Foundation

After you’ve installed the operating system roles and features, install the following software in the order shown:
1. .NET Framework 4.5.2
2. Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0, Core Runtime 64-bit

Edge Transport Server Role

First, Edge Transport Server is a workgroup server, not joined to Domain
1. Open Windows PowerShell.
2. Run the following command to install the required Windows components.

 Install-WindowsFeature ADLDS

After you’ve installed the operating system roles and features, install .NET Framework 4.5.2

Admin Tools only

On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

• Windows 8.1 computers prerequisite .NET Framework 4.5.2 .
• Windows 10 meets all of the necessary prerequisites to install the Exchange 2016 admin tools.

Office online Server Preview

Before you begin:
• Windows Server 2012 R2
• All available Windows updates installed

To install Office Online Server Preview, do the following on the computer that you’ll install Office Online Server Preview on:
1. Install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015
2. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2
3. Install the required operating system features by running the following command:

Install-WindowsFeature Web-Server, Web-Mgmt-Tools, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-WebServer, Web-Common-Http, Web-Default-Doc, Web-Static-Content, Web-Performance, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Security, Web-Filtering, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-App-Dev, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Includes, InkandHandwritingServices

4. Reboot the computer after the Windows features have been installed.
