Before you deploy Exchange 2016, you need to carefully consider some important issues. It’s important that you understand these issues before you begin your deployment so that you don’t run into any surprises along the way.
Server Roles
Exchange 2016 includes two server roles:
- Mailbox server role : includes the Client Access protocols, the Transport service, the Mailbox databases, and Unified Messaging.
- Edge Transport server role: deployed in the organization’s perimeter network and outside the internal Active Directory forest
Active Directory schema update
This schema update is required to add objects and attributes to Active Directory to support Exchange 2016.
- Minimum Forest Functional Level : Server 2008
Certificate
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates help to protect communication between your Exchange servers and clients and other mail servers by encrypting data and, optionally, identifying each side of the connection.
- Third-party certificate authorities (CAs)

- Self-signed
Office Online Server Preview
Office Online Server Preview enables users to view supported file attachments within Outlook on the web (Outlook) without downloading them first and without having a local installation of the program. Without Office Online Server Preview installed, Outlook users need to download attachments to their local computer, and then open them in a local application.
Split DNS
Split domain name system (DNS) is a concept that allows you to configure different IP addresses for the same host name, depending on where the originating DNS request came from. This is also known as split-horizon DNS, split-view DNS, or split-brain DNS. Split DNS can help you reduce the number of host names that you need to manage for Exchange by allowing your clients to connect to Exchange through the same host name, whether they’re connecting from the Internet or from the intranet.

Exchange 2016 and Exchange Online support the following versions of Outlook:
- Outlook 2016
- Outlook 2013 SP1 (KB3115127)
- Outlook 2010 SP2 (KB2965295).
- Outlook for Mac for Office 365
- Outlook for Mac 2011
